Lucknow: A fresh political debate has erupted in Uttar Pradesh following a meeting of the INDIA bloc, as differences between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) over seat-sharing have once again come to the forefront.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav advised the Congress to show a “big heart” and accommodate regional parties according to their electoral strength and ground presence. His remarks quickly triggered a strong response from Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai, who asserted that alliances cannot function in a one-sided manner and that all parties must demonstrate mutual generosity.
Post-meeting tensions surface in INDIA bloc
Although the INDIA alliance meeting in Delhi projected unity against the BJP, the aftermath has exposed underlying tensions between key partners. Leaders of various opposition parties have begun asserting their regional influence and bargaining positions ahead of upcoming state elections.
Political observers note that while the alliance remains united at the national level, internal discussions on seat distribution are becoming increasingly competitive at the state level, particularly in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh.
Akhilesh Yadav pushes for equitable seat-sharing
Akhilesh Yadav clearly indicated that if the INDIA bloc is to remain strong, the Congress—being the largest national party—must accommodate regional allies more fairly. He emphasized that seat allocation should reflect each party’s organisational strength and voter base.
Referring to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Yadav highlighted that the SP had allotted 17 seats to Congress in Uttar Pradesh, out of which the party managed to win six. He argued that regional parties played a significant role in the alliance’s overall performance, especially in Uttar Pradesh where the SP emerged as a dominant opposition force by winning 37 seats.

Congress responds with counter-argument
Responding to Yadav’s remarks, Ajay Rai stated that the Congress has always shown generosity, but alliances cannot operate on unilateral expectations. He stressed that all partner parties must also act with flexibility and respect the spirit of cooperation.
He also pointed out that in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Congress contested largely independently and managed to win only two seats, indirectly highlighting the need for realistic seat-sharing negotiations.
SP gears up for 2027 strategy
Following the Delhi meeting, Akhilesh Yadav held an internal meeting with party leaders in Lucknow to discuss preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and alliance strategy.
According to SP sources, the party is reportedly considering offering Congress around 50 to 60 seats in the upcoming state elections, signaling early-stage negotiations—and potential friction—within the INDIA bloc.
As both parties continue to stake their claims, the question remains whether the INDIA alliance can maintain unity while balancing competing regional ambitions.
